Gravel Privateer
After a decade in the World Tour focusing on races like the Tour de France, I struck off on my own, jumping off the smooth tarmac to seek adventures on the less-trafficked route. At the time, it was unheard of; both the thought of one professionally racing gravel full time and of leaving what is widely considered the major leagues for an amateur discipline. But it resonated, deeply. I set out to create a new category of Pro: I called myself a Privateer; a team of one. I aligned myself with partners who didn't just share a space on my jersey, but shared my ethos and desire to collaborate. I stayed true to the belief in this fledgling space that a rising tide raises all boats. I became as much a promoter and marketer as I was a racer. Nowadays, Privateering is an industry wide term, and the sport is as competitive as it's sibling disciplines of road and MTB. I've since retired from living to chase podiums, but I can't and won't retire from Gravel. I focus on leveraging all I've learned over a 20+ year career to help brands and today's star athletes succeed. From public speaking, Privateer consulting, events appearances to even the occassional race start, I'm passionate about continuing to promote the Gospel of Gravel.
Gravel?
Gravel isn't just a surface, it's a lifestyle. These cycling events value the festival as much as the course. They're run in the "marathon format" of pro and age-groupers all competing together on the same course. That shared experience is powerful. These off-road adventures became my greener pasture; a place where I could race and compete, but also enjoy the camaraderie and community of our 2-wheeled tribe. An exciting discipline that values inclusivity, humanity, and an entrepreneurial mindset.
